Well, I've thought over it for the past few weeks and have finally gathered up the courage to ask a major question.

Over time I've grown to shape my OCs around the Star Fox universe, however with one important detail: It takes place 80 years after the events of the last Star Fox game. I did this at first to allow more flexibility with my ideas and so that I wouldn't be constrained by the plot of the games of the Star Fox series. However I find my ideas still being bound to the series, with some exceptions of course.

Which brings me to this question:
Should I continue shaping my character off of StarFox, or should I break off and turn it into something completely original?

On one hand basing it off the StarFox series would give my ideas a solid backbone. However this comes at a cost at which I must adhere to certain elements of StarFox cannon. Also there are some limitations to what I can and can't do in order to not break the continuity of the StarFox universe.

On the other hand I can branch off. With this I have the license to create whatever I want. I could change the history entirely, create my own worlds, and shape the plot as I please leaving no limitations to the ideas and story. However this relies completely on my own creativity and inspirations, I will also be on my own in coming up with original content.
